 The std incubation period refers to the time between getting the STI and the time when the actual signs and symptoms shows. It is important to note that each STI has its own std incubation period. However, when people get infected with stds, most of them do not show any signs immediately. Symptoms are therefore not a good measure of determining whether you are infected or not. Many STDs tend to remain asymptomatic for many years but the infected person can still spread the disease. This is why it is advisable to undergo a check for STD if you have had unprotected sex even where no symptoms show.

Another important thing to note is that while safer sex can minimize your chances of contracting an STD, this is also not foolproof. Using  a condom only help to minimize the spread of diseases that are transmitted through the skin rather than those which spread through bodily fluids. This is why it is important to consider testing as well as other risk sources before engaging in sex. Here are some of the common STDs and their incubation period.

• Gonorrhea. This is one of the most common asymptomatic STIs. However, when symptoms appear, this is usually 2 days after getting exposed or they can take as long as one month.
• Chlamydia. While there are many people who don’t have any symptoms, when these occur, it is usually one to 3 weeks after getting exposed to the bacteria. Even patients who are asymptomatic when they have Chlamydia can end up getting complication. However, it is advisable to ensure that you get regularly screened by a physician.
• Syphilis. In most cases, the first symptoms of a syphilis infection will appear 21 days after getting infected .However, these can appear between 10 and 90 days from the date of getting exposed to the bacterium.
• HIV .This is a disease that remains asymptomatic for a period of many years. However, some people will have a flu and fever-like symptoms around 2 weeks from the date of exposure.
